The UN's top court has ordered Israel to halt its operation in the southern Gaza city of Raffa.

Israel must immediately halt its military offense and any other action in the Raffa

governor which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.

South Africa asked the International Court of Justice to impose emergency measures two weeks ago,

after accusing Israel of using forced evacuation orders in Raffa to quote,

in danger rather than protect civilian life. This ruling is part of South Africa's ongoing genocide case against Israel over the war in Gaza.

South Africa welcomes the ruling it called groundbreaking,

while Israel's far-right finance minister said in response to the ruling,

those who, quote, demand that the state of Israel stopped the war are by proxy demanding that

Israel quote, decree itself to cease to exist. The court says Israel has to submit a report

within one month to show progress in two key areas, ensuring access to UN

investigators looking into the genocide allegations and opening the Raffa border crossing for humanitarian assistance.

Now, although rulings issued by the ICJ are binding, the court has no actual means of enforcing its decisions,

and cannot compel the Israeli government to change its military plans in Gaza.
