Hey there, from CNN, I'm Chris Debeau with the five things you need to know for Thursday, January 18th.

Iran and Pakistan might not be the best of friends, but they've mostly been pretty peaceful

neighbors until this week.

Over the last two days, the countries have launched strikes inside

each other's territories with both governments saying they were targeting

terrorists or militant groups.

CNN Sophia Sephi is in Islamabad so I asked her how Pakistan reacted when Iran conducted strikes on Tuesday.

Krista, these strikes definitely took Pakistan by surprise.

Though the Pakistani Prime Minister actually met his Iranian counterpart in Davos just a few hours

before the Iranian strikes took place on Tuesday night Pakistan time.

Now while Pakistan has struck targets into Iran this morning, Thursday morning Pakistan time,

statements from the Pakistani government and military

definitely sound like they want to de-escalate the issue,

and it's clearly not something that they want brewing on their Western border.

Pakistan isn't the only place Iran has launched strikes this week.

It also hit what it called terror targets in Iraq and Syria,

and this all comes as the US has hit Iran-backed hoothe militants in Yemen, again, making it the fourth set of strikes in less than a week.
