Hello from CNN, I'm Chris Debeau with the five things you need to know for Monday, September 18th.

A homecoming several years in the making, the U.S. confirms five Americans that the State Department deemed as wrongfully detained in Iran or on their way home.

It's part of a complex deal between the U.S. and Iran that was mediated by Katari officials,

because relations between Washington and Tehran are far from friendly.

Following the release, senior administration officials said the US will issue new sanctions on Iran's former president and the Ministry of Intelligence. The deal to free Americans

included the US unfreezing $6 billion in Iranian funds to bank accounts in Qatar

for humanitarian purchases only, a move many Republicans have criticized.

And a senior administration official said five Iranian nationals who were in U.S. custody were granted

clemency, with two of them expected to return to Iran, while the other 308 trial in the US.

White House National Security official John Kirby

said, don't mistake this deal as a sign that US-Iran relations

are improving.

No one should take away from today's events any idea that we are somehow turning a blind eye

to what Iran is doing in the region or around the world.

Not at all, quite the contrary.

The United Auto Workers Strike entered its fourth day today,

and though experts say the U.S. economy is already getting bruised,

its impact is not likely to push the nation into a recession.

Anderson Economic Group, who works for some of these automakers, says it would cost the U.S. economy

$5 billion if all UAW workers at Ford, General Motors, and Stelantis go on strike for 10 days.

So far, though, fewer than 10% of the workers at these companies have gone on strike.

The group also says businesses near the strike sites could see their revenue slow and that cars could get more expensive due to the halt in production.
