I'm pulling away from the curb because I drop my son off at school.

We all know what that means. It's time for other drive to work.

0:08.1

Okay, today is another in my History of Magic series.

0:12.6

When last we left, I talked about Dominaria, and we had shifted over to a completely new system,

0:20.7

from design and development to vision design, set design, and play design.

0:25.6

So it's interesting that the first three sets after Dominaria, although it was the new system, like the idea of the new system is every set would be a large set, every set would be drafted alone, and

0:39.5

mostly we'd go to different places, but if we wanted to stay in the same world, we could,

0:45.7

which we made use of right away. So the next three sets in a row all took place on the same place,

0:52.7

on Ravnika. So it's sort of funny that like we moved

0:56.6

away from blocks and the next magic year all stayed on the same place. So what happened was we were

1:04.1

telling the story, the Bolas arc. So the story had begun in Kaladesh. It was a three-year arc, and we were completing.

1:12.2

And so basically, Doug Byer had come up with the core of the story,

1:15.7

and what he wanted was it ends with a giant Plainswalker war

1:20.9

between Nicole Bolas and almost every plane walker that you knew.

1:29.0

And so we wanted that to be on a place that meant something, right?

1:33.9

We wanted it to be in a place where there was jeopardy.

1:38.0

And the most popular plane was Ravnikov.

1:40.6

We're like, okay, like, let's have this on the heart of where we wanted it to matter. But we knew they were going to be in Ravnika. We're like, okay, let's have this on the heart of where, we wanted it to matter,

1:46.5

but we knew that we're going to be in Ravnika, we hadn't been to Ravnika in a while, that if the

1:51.6

set was on Ravnika but we didn't get the guilds, we thought people might be upset. So we said,

1:55.4

okay, here's what we're going to do. Let's first revisit Ravnika, have two sets on Ravnika, get our guild sets out of the way.

2:02.8

And then the third set would be on Ravnika, but not about Ravnika.
