Summary

The Buddha said, "I will teach you the Dhamma compared to a raft, for the purpose of crossing over, not for the purpose of holding onto." Everything in Buddhism, including Buddhism itself is a tool, a means to an end, but not the end itself. In this episode, I will revisit the parable of the raft and share my thoughts about what this teaching means to me.

0:05.5	number 118. I am your host Noah Rosheta and today I'm going to revisit the parable of the
0:12.4	raft. As always keep in mind you don't need to use what you learned from Buddhism to
0:22.2	be a Buddhist. You can use it to learn to be a better whatever you already are. Before
0:27.5	jumping into the podcast episode I'd like to talk about the Zen Kawan that I shared
0:34.5	in the last podcast episode and this is the Kawan the Moon cannot be stolen. So a reminder
0:41.0	the Zen Kawan goes like this, Ryokan a Zen master lived the simplest kind of life in a little
0:47.6	hut at the foot of a mountain. One evening a thief visited the hut only to discover
0:53.4	there was nothing to steal. Ryokan returned and caught him. You have come a long way to
0:58.5	visit me he told the prowler and you should not return empty handed. Please take my clothes
1:03.9	as a gift. The thief was bewildered he took the clothes and slunk away. Ryokan sat naked,
1:11.7	watching the moon, poor fellow he used I wish I could have given him this beautiful moon.
1:18.1	Now when I first heard this podcast I thought it was a little funny and ironic especially that
1:23.9	last sentence that Ryokan sat there naked watching the moon saying I wish I could give him this
1:30.5	beautiful moon and knowing that in our modern form of English in a very real way he was giving him
1:38.7	the moon. You know as he sat there naked that's kind of a funny irony just with the evolution of
1:44.4	language and the meaning of words and I couldn't help but to chuckle the first time I heard this
1:50.9	Kawan. So I want to talk about this a little bit. As I mentioned before we I post this in the
1:59.3	Patreon group and I like to hear some of the discussions that come out of that and some of the
2:03.9	thoughts that other podcast listeners share and I want to share a couple of these because I think
2:09.9	they hit on what this Kawan means for me. So the first one comes from Bob. This is Bob's comment
2:18.0	on the Kawan. He says to me Ryokan is saying I wish this man could appreciate what he already has.
