watching about suicide. And so I wanted to have her on the podcast today to talk to you guys about

her experience with teen suicide and how she's been a survivor of teen suicide and her own unique experience with the challenges

of navigating mental health as a teen. And our teen suicide race are increasing drastically right now.

I'm really happy to be here today on this podcast.

My name is Monique and I currently live in Washington, but I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio.

I'm currently a grad student at Arizona State University.

I'm also a writer and educator and a mental health advocate.

And I think my mental health advocacy comes from the struggles I've had with my own mental health,

especially as a teen and young adults in college.

I struggled a lot with anxiety and depression, which is what I talk about and my suicide

attempt in college in the tell by story documentary with Jason Reed.

So yeah, I'm just really happy to be here today to be able to talk to teens about maybe recognizing some of the symptoms of mental health and the struggles that they have.

When you say you're a mental health advocate, you go around and you speak to students about mental health, correct?

Yes.

Okay. And so do you travel around? Like, what does that look like being a mental health advocate?

Yeah. So I've been basically going around the Seattle areas. And I've talked at middle schools, high schools, a different kind of church events, like the youth groups and things like that. And I work with the National Alliance of Middle Illness. And so in those presentations, we would talk about some of the symptoms of mental health conditions and things to look out for and also give them some resources of places they can go to reach out for help.
