We're searching for the end of the war, for then and for now. We haven't found it yet. Not at Appomattox Courthouse,

not at Bennett Place. So how about May 23rd, May 24th, the Army, the Grand Review of the Army

of the Republic, marching in front of the now President Johnson, commander of all the armies,

Ulysses Grant and other dignitaries.

Sheridan's not there, however.

Importantly, Grant has given Sheridan an order.

This is his 34-year-old, extremely brave cavalry commander.

Sheridan is to go west.

And why, Professor, why wasn't Sheridan allowed to go west. And why, Professor,

why wasn't Sheridan allowed to participate

even that day

in accepting the hurrahs of the crowd?

The Grand Review,

which, as you say,

is a two-day review,

reviews the armies of the United States,

specifically the armies, we call the armies of the United States, specifically the armies of the East.

That would include the Army of the Potomac and others.

And then the armies of the West, who are under Sherman.

And however, there's still a lot of Union troops who are not there because they're spread out further west. But now to your point, Grant has given Sheridan his most trusted cavalry commander, the task
