In Hebrew, עניין (inyan) means matter, business, or thing. Many Hebrew learners confuse מעוניין and מתעניין, often switching between them as if they are one and the same, which they are not.

So in this episode, Guy explains these important differences. Oh! and he goes over some useful slang expressions using עניין and ניינים as well!

Bachur/bachura la-inyan – Great guy/girl – בחור/בחורה לעניין

Lichyot be-katan ze lo la-inyan – Living small is not right – לחיות בקטן זה לא לעניין

Ze lo la-inyan – It's not appropriate – זה לא לעניין

Nir'aa li she-ze dei barur she-hi ken ba-inyan sheli – I think it's quite clear she's into me – נראה לי שזה די ברור שהיא כן בעניין שלי

Ata ba-inyan bichlal? – Are you interested at all? – ?אתה בעניין בכלל

Hu be-inyan shel banim o shel banot? – Is he into guys or girls? – ?הוא בעניין שלי בנים או של בנות

Tamid nimtsa ba-inyanim – Always in the know – תמיד נמצא בעניינים

Hu lo ba-inyanim – He's not up to date – הוא לא בעניינים

Yesh li inyanim – I've got things (to do), errands – יש לי עניינים

Hayu inyanim – There were "things" – "היו "עניינים

Lakachat et ha-inyanim la-yadaim – To take initiative; to take things into your own hands – לקחת את העניינים לידיים

Kach/Kchi/Kchu ta'inyanim la-yadaim – Take things into your own hands – קח/קחי/קחו ת'עניינים לידיים

Inyani – Practical; matter-of-fact – ענייני

Hu haya meod inyani – He was very matter of fact – הוא היה מאוד ענייני

Eich le'anyen otach – How to interest you – איך לעניין אותך

Efshar le-anyen otcha be… – May I interest you with… – ...אפשר לעניין אותך ב

Ani lo me'unyan/me'unyenet – I am not interested – אני לא מעוניין/מעוניינת
