The much politicized Aston Villa football match against Maccabee Tel Aviv went ahead last night

with fans of the Israeli team absent from the event. That followed a much debated decision by the

West Midlands police to ban the fans, many of whom had been involved in scenes of violence

and abuse

in Amsterdam last year. That included masses of Maccabee fans chanting,

let the IDF win to fuck the Arabs and there are no schools in Gaza because all the children

are dead. Other fans tore down Palestinian flags hanging from the windows of Amsterdam residents,

chanting fuck you, fuck you, Palestine. And gangs of Maccabee fans appeared to roam the streets

of the city carrying poles and planks, threatening violence and attacking taxi drivers.

There was also violence from Amsterdam residents, much of it retaliatory and some of it admittedly

racist. But it was those scenes, as well as information from the Dutch police, that framed the

West Midlands police ban on Maccabee fans. Now that was a police operational decision that
