Today we turn our attention to the EU.

European leadership has always been critical to dealing with the climate crisis but

just last week the EU failed to put in place a net zero by 2050 target.

We discuss what happened and why and we talk to Miguel Arias Keniete,

the man who as European Commissioner for Climate and Energy has been responsible for the last

five years for climate strategy across 28 countries.

Thanks for being here. So today we're going to talk about the EU and it's been an interesting couple of weeks

across Europe.

Two weeks ago we spoke to Prime Minister Theresa May, who had just recently implemented

a net zero by 2050 climate change target for the UK and we spoke

confidently at that time that the European Council would take that target and

adopt it across all of the member states of Europe. Now what we saw happen

was that they were unable to implement that and we'll speak to Commissioner

Kenyete later about what happened but let's just start with why that was impossible and where we go

from here. So let's let's start with why it's actually important and why it's

difficult so it's important because as we had discussed in the

interview with Prime Minister Theresa May, many nations have a decarbonization target that goes to 80% or 85% and just psychologically
