Good morning, and welcome to Kid News. I'm Tori. It's Wednesday, November 17, 2021, and

we begin with a California school for the Deaf in Riverside, California, which usually

doesn't experience a lot of big success in sports. But that's changed this year with

their high school football team. The Cubs previously had seven straight losing seasons.

This year, they are 11 and 0 so far, and last weekend in the second round of the playoffs,

they trounce the desert Christian Knights 84 to 12, a team which isn't hearing impaired

and despite using their second string players the entire second half.

The reason for their success? Coach Keith Adams tells The New York Times, there's a real

sense of chemistry among this talented team who've played together for years at lower

levels. The players and coaches all communicate using a flurry of hand signals and don't

need a huddle or shouted instructions from the sidelines. And they're now two games away

from winning the division championship for the first time in the school's 68-year history.

Drivers are feeling some pain at the pump these days. Gas prices in California reached an

all-time high this week, with the average price of a regular gallon soaring to $4.68

according to the American Automobile Association. A AAA spokesman said the prices are being

driven up primarily by higher crude oil costs and an increased demand for fuel. There was

really low demand during the pandemic, and it's ramped up rapidly as more people get vaccinated

with the desire to get out there and travel really on the rise. And that will certainly be the

case next week when many Americans hit the road for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Now that President Biden has signed the infrastructure bill into law, states are making

plans on what improvements they want to get done, including building new tunnels and bridges

to ease road congestion, more electric car charging stations, and protecting waterways.
