we begin with a small boarding school in Massachusetts ringing up a new answer to the cell phones

in class problem. The principal banned smartphones on campus and replaced them with light phones

that can make calls and send clunky texts, but of no internet, camera, or apps. At first,

the kids were furious, some were crying, according to the Wall Street Journal. But Buckston

School, with 57 students enrolled, found the constant connectivity was really messing with

their strong sense of community. Now, nearly two months in, students say they're getting

used to life without their faces stuck in their phones, and teachers say they're thrilled

to not have to be gadget police. The kids can still check social media on their laptops

or tablets, but many say they actually prefer this setup. One telling the paper, I'm a lot

happier being on social media less. I think I've been a lot more self-aware.

A 14-year-old from San Diego is the big winner at this year's 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Leanne fans design, headphones that not only play music, but can also detect and treat

ear infections by using blue light therapy. The ninth grader called them Finson Headphones

after the scientists to discover that this light can treat bacterial inflammation. With

over 700 million cases of mid-air infections every year, Leanne hopes her invention can

be an effective and low-cost treatment option, and she adds, could prevent up to 60% of hearing

loss in children. And what kind of music does this award-winning team like to listen to

while she's wearing her headphones? Leanne says she's a big fan of K-pop group BTS.
