Good morning and welcome to Kid News. I'm Tori. Today is Monday, November 12th, 2018.

And we begin with the nation pausing to remember all those who've served our country.

While it's celebrated today with a day off from

school and work, Veterans Day was officially yesterday and was once known by a

different name. President Woodrow Wilson called it Armistice Day to mark the Armistice

or Agreement that brought an end to World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day

of the 11th month in 1918, 100 years ago. By the 1950s, however, the US had been

involved in two more wars, World War II and the Korean War, so Congress changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day to honor

servicemen and women from all wars.

Millions of flags will fly today in honor of the holiday and for the modern day design we can thank a high school

student.

It was 1958 and there were only 48 stars on the flag.

Hawaii and Alaska weren't yet states. As a school project Bob Heft

rearranged the stars on his parents flag to add two more just in case. His new

design had five rows of six stars and four rows of five which allowed for more

states without the appearance of a design change. His teacher gave him a B-minous and said

quote if you don't like your grade, get it accepted into Washington.

Then come back, and I might consider changing your grade.

Fast forward two years to a call from President Eisenhower.

Bob's design for the modern day flag was chosen out of a thousand.

And yes, the teacher did change his grade.

California needs rain badly.
