Summary

One of those very important variables in shooting performance and accuracy that so many of us take for granted or never think to check – the twist rate of the barrel in our rifle. What is the twist rate, why is it so important to consider, how do different twist rates affect our projectiles and how can you figure out which twist rate is best for your application? Ryan Muckenhirn joins Jimmy and Mark to drop some knowledge on the subject!

What's up everybody? We have 10 minutes here. Mr Ryan Muckinearns across the table from us and we are going to talk today about barrel twist rates in your rifle

0:08.9

Although this is a thing in pistols and really just any kind of firearm right? Yes. So let's talk about what

0:16.2

they are real quick and what we're referring to. I think most people get it

0:18.9

it's kind of one of the specs you see when you're looking at a new gun. The

0:21.6

twist rate of the barrel you'll see like one in seven, one in eight, one in seven one in eight one in nine what's what's going

0:25.9

on there real basic level Ryan we are talking about how many inches it takes for

0:31.6

one complete rotation of the bullet so 360 degrees of rotation

0:36.7

over a certain amount of inches. Okay so one in seven is like one full rotation of the bullet in seven inches.

0:43.3

Yes.

0:43.8

Okay, got it.

0:45.3

And that is important because...

0:48.3

Sure.

0:49.3

Bullet weights and bullet lengths will require varying twist rates.

0:53.0

And there's a whole lot that goes into this too,

0:56.0

so it's not so straightforward,

0:58.0

but effectively on the liquefied scale,

1:01.0

length and weight, the higher you go in those figures the

1:04.4

faster you need to twist the bullet so as to obtain gyroscopic stabilization.

1:09.4

Okay the only way to get a heavier bullet is to make it longer because you can just make it

1:14.0

wider around because otherwise it's not going to fit down the barrel.

1:18.0

Yeah.

1:19.0

You're going to say or there's another way to make it heavier?
