Summary

Though she is only nine, Nanea just can't wait to grow up. Living with her family in Honolulu, Nanea dreams of being a teacher and sharing "the spirit of aloha" with others. Then, disaster strikes on December 7, 1941. Nanea's world gets turned upside down with the attack on Pearl Harbor. We discuss how Nanea's story can be compared to Molly's, whose books are also set in the early 1940s, the final years of World War II. Going deeper, we also explore what these books teach us about living through war---and what they don't teach about United States imperialism.

as a blue collar worker at the Medford Duncan Donuts?

0:29.6

Perhaps I would give him the full egot for that. I mean, here he's an Oscar, but it's like that was

0:34.0

so, it was stirring. I think when JLo accepts the donut, that's what like clinches the Grammy for me.

0:40.1

Absolutely, and I just feel like I'm going to tell my future children someday, like that is death

0:47.6

and it's like this is kind of it. I'm struggling.

Okay, everyone, welcome to Dolls of Our Lives. This is the podcast where we're reliving the American

Girl series book by book. I'm Mary. I'm not Ben Affleck. I'm Allison. Thank God. Honestly,

1:11.8

like who can take that on at this time? I mean, I just, I don't know what it's like to be in his life,

1:16.7

and I hope he's okay, but it just seems like it's a lot. I think it's telling that he looked so happy

1:22.8

in that drive-through, and I think it's also revealing of some level of authenticity that a number

of people were just annoyed that he was there. Yeah, I mean, it's like peak Massachusetts culture

1:33.2

that's like everyone would probably want to see him there, but then also be annoyed at the traffic

1:37.6

and line that are caused by him being there. Yes. Yes. It's like he's one of us, but we can't

1:43.1

handle like his glow up. I don't know, and it's like he could do anything, but he finds peace at
