Summary

By the spring of 1942, so much has changed for Nanea Mitchell and her family. In the second book of her series, we find Nanea adapting to life under martial law, returning to school, and missing her dear friend Donna. When Nanea becomes aware that some dogs are getting involved directly in the war effort, she becomes concerned about her own beloved pet, the aptly named Mele. Never one to just panic, Nanea finds a way to add her dog to her hula performance. We talk about the current wave of nostalgia for the 1990s and nostalgic takes on World War II. We also consider Nanea’s sense of sacrifice and how these books speak to our most recent past (the late 2010s). Additional topics include pet therapy dogs, Justin Bieber, and the TV show Insecure.

So very briefly, we are going to get into a time machine to 2017.

0:04.5

Okay. This show does not exist. There are three top charting songs all by Justin Bieber.

0:10.5

Let me love you. I'm the one and Despacito in reverse order of popular.

0:16.2

This first Nenea book, the first two Nenea books are going to come out and then they're going

0:20.7

to come out again in 2019. What happened between 2017 and 2019 to Justin Bieber that caused a rip

0:29.0

in the universe that gave us these books? Oh my god. I don't know, but I just have to leave it

0:34.5

with a question that he invited me to ask, what do you mean? What do I mean? He marries Haley.

0:42.1

Now, Haley, me Baldwin Bieber. There's one eyeball on the national dollar bill and one eye out for

0:49.2

Selena. And that's the world that gave us these books. Oh my god. What a moment in time.

1:02.2

Welcome everyone to dolls of our lives. This is the podcast where we're reliving the American Girl

1:07.2

series book by book. I'm Mary. I'm still Allison. I am not married to Justin Bieber at this time.

1:13.3

But you've thought about it. Maybe hard to say. I have not. You have not considered.

1:20.4

Okay, that's, I think that's actually a sign of good health. So I'm proud of you. I am fascinated by

1:25.0

recent TikTok. I just told you about that where someone was like due to Hillsong, Haley was originally

1:30.8

intended to marry Chris Pratt and then ends up with Justin Bieber. We have been in kind of a

1:36.1

fascinating place because typically we're thinking about multiple time periods of, you know, years

1:42.0

past when we read these books. Categorically, it used to be the 1990s and some other period,

1:47.3

like 1774. Now we're in 2017 in 1942. And if I may, I don't want to be in either of those years.

1:55.2

I will hard pass on both of those times. Yeah. I mean, I was still in grad school in 2017.

2:02.8

No thanks. Don't want to, don't take me back, please.

2:06.1

The opening lines, which we are just going to kind of probably talk in passing of the

2:10.9

additional Nenea supplemental, which is that you are following her footprints in the sand.
