It's around 10.30pm on the evening of the 18th of September 1877.

George Barnhart, the station manager and telegraph operator at the Big Springs train station is settling in to what seems to be a quiet night.

Big Spring Station is found in the middle of the Nebraska Plains. It's an isolated stop with very few houses or people

close by. George's evening will be soundtracked by the sounds of crickets chirping, the occasional bark

of coyotes and a few whistles from the steam trains passing through.

Big Springs is a popular stop at the Transcontinental Railroad because it's placed with a large

natural water supply which is obviously an essential resource for steam engines.

Many trains stop at the Big Springs to fill up their water tanks before continuing the

350 miles east to the final stop on that line, the city of Omaha, on the border between Nebraska and Iowa.
