0:00.0 | I'm not pulling out of the driveway. We all know what that means. It's time for another drive to work at home edition. |
0:06.0 | So today I have Ian Duke here. He was the set lead for Wilds of Eldrain, and we're going to talk all about wilds of Eldrain. |
0:14.0 | Hey, Ian. |
0:15.0 | Hey, Mark, thanks for having me on. |
0:17.0 | Okay, so last week I talked with Chris Mooney all about the vision design. So we're going to pick up our story at the beginning of set design. Okay, so let me talk about, I'm going to just bring components, and then we're going to talk about how you adapted those components. How does that sound? Sounds great. Okay, so let's start with what I consider the heart of the design, rolls. |
0:39.6 | So when rolls were handed over, they were tokens, they were aura tokens, but we handed over, I think, 10 plus. |
0:47.9 | There were a lot of them, more so that ended up in the set. |
0:51.1 | So how did you handle tokens, roll tokens? Yeah, so we knew we wanted roles to be a major part of the set. So how did you handle tokens? Roll tokens. Yeah. Yeah. So we knew we wanted roles to be a |
0:57.6 | major part of the set. We knew that having enchantment aura tokens was a new thing to magic, |
1:03.3 | largely speaking, especially having this many in the same set. And we knew they were kind of |
1:07.5 | a central quality to the set. They interacted with a lot of the |
1:11.0 | different mechanics and different limited archetypes. So we knew they would be a core thing, |
1:14.8 | but there were a couple big open questions. And some of those questions included how many |
1:19.2 | roles should there be? What should those roles be? What are they representing? And then sort of |
1:24.2 | how powerful should they be? What sorts of things should they be doing, |
1:32.9 | how disparate should the power level of the different roles be, and these were all known questions in the sense that, you know, when Mark and Chris handed off to me, we kind of knew all these things |
1:37.8 | would be in flux throughout the process. So it was the job of myself and my team to figure out, |
1:42.5 | you know, these questions, how many roles should there be, what should they do, all that sort of thing. |
1:47.0 | Okay, so let's start by tackling the power level issue you talked about. |
1:50.8 | So there's two ways to do roles, one of which is they're all different power levels, meaning |
1:56.3 | if you cast the role like by itself, it would cost a different amount of mana, or they're |
2:01.1 | all the same, and basically there's a thin band of power so that they're all in the same band. |
