In this episode, I want to talk to you about some of my favorite books on preaching.

How does one learn to preach?

There are several answers I would give to that question.

I think you learn to preach, first of all, by preaching.

You learn to preach by preaching.

There is a sense in which one does not best learn to preach via a textbook or through some system or theory of preaching.

You grow in preaching by preaching. My advice to young preachers is regularly that you take as many opportunities that you can get to preach to preach. You grow as a preacher by preaching.

I think you also grow as a preacher, secondly, by listening to other preachers. I think you should

be listening to preachers that don't necessarily go at it the way you do. I think you should listen to more than one preacher.

I think you should listen to preachers who are outside of your context. You should listen to preachers,

and by that I think I would include reading preaching books, reading the

sermons of great preachers and listening. There are so many ways to get access to the actual

preaching of some of the world's great preachers. You learn to preach by preaching. You learn to preach by listening to preaching.

And you learn to preach by studying preaching. As a preacher, if you're going to grow, you've got to be

reading. And whatever your reading diet is, you need to have in it some system of regularly reading books on the craft of preaching,

the art of preaching, the science of preaching.

And in this episode, I just want to talk to you about some of my favorite books on

preaching. I trust that there will be other versions of this podcast down the road, but we'll

start where we start today. These are not necessarily the most classic books.
