Saturday September 30th. We are just hours away from a government shutdown. So in the plainest English I can manage,

here is where things stand on Capitol Hill.

House Republicans are meeting behind closed doors

this morning to come up with a stopgap plan.

But House Speaker Kevin McCarthy

again failed to find agreement within his own party on Friday, so chances of

finding a way forward are slim. And McCarthy says they won't consider a bipartisan Senate proposal to keep the government

running until November 17th because it contains funding for Ukraine.

As long as that dynamic continues, the government will shut down at midnight.

So I want to understand how this would impact the average American and the wider economy.

Matt, what would this actually look like?

Yeah, David, the timing really couldn't be worse.

We've already got plenty of dark clouds hovering over this economy.

A government shutdown probably will not wreck this economy, especially if it's short, but it's definitely not going to help.

And we know it will disrupt the lives of everyday Americans.

1.3 million active duty troops won't get paid.

Countless travelers could face delays at airports and key economic data

won't get released.

There's never a good time to shut down the government, but right now this is the last thing the economy needs.
