0:12.9	Last time in chapter one of First Kings, we opened with an aging king, King David is old and his body is failing so much that he has a beautiful
0:22.2	young girl named Abashag to keep him warm. Adonaja, David's son, takes advantage of the situation
0:27.8	and he rallies support in attempt to become king. Nathaniel found out and he and Bathsheba told David.
0:34.7	Well, David rallies enough to pronounce Solomon King? Solomon then pardoned Adonaja
0:40.9	as long as he is willing to behave. And we'll find out he's not going to be willing. All right,
0:46.8	Solomon is on the throne and David is failing fast. Scene one, David's final words to Solomon.
0:53.8	When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a
0:57.2	charge to Solomon, his son. I am about to go the way of all the earth, he said. So be strong,
1:02.9	act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires. Walk in obedience to him and keep his
1:08.8	decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written
1:12.3	in the law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go, and that the
1:18.8	Lord may keep his promise to me. If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully
1:24.4	before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor
1:28.8	on the throne of Israel. David encourages Solomon to do three things as a leader. Be strong,
1:35.6	keep God's laws, and walk faithfully with all your heart and soul. What David is doing here
1:42.0	is reiterating all he had been taught as an Israelite. David wants Solomon
1:48.1	to learn from Joshua to be strong. This is the theme from the book of Joshua, season six
1:55.6	of Bible Book Club. Both Moses and God commissioned Joshua to be strong and courageous and David wants the same for Solomon.
