Welcome to Searchlight, a survey through Scripture with Pastor John Corson.

It is our desire to bring you a systematic study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, book by book.

Today on Searchlight, we are beginning a study through the book of First Corinthians.

This book has a lot to teach us about the church and our individual roles in the church.

The reason that we learn a lot about the church and spiritual life is because the church

at Corinth was really messed up.

So the Apostle Paul spends a lot of time correcting and exhorting

the Saints in Corinth, and we get to benefit from these practical exhortations. Let's join

Pastor John for our first verse by verse study in First Corinthians. I would not want to be the pastor of the church at Corinth.

Man what a mess. If I were grading that church, I would give to them generously a D.

For you see, as you read through 1 Corinthians, you see that this church at Corinth was a church that was a church that was divided and defiled and defamed in the community

in which they lived. They deserve a D, this defiled, divided, defamed group.

They originally wrote Paul a letter asking him about a theological question concerning marriage.

Paul doesn't get to answering that question until chapter 7. He uses the opportunity to share a few things with those Christians there at Corinth.
