The war in the Middle East is one way of approaching the violence throughout the Uma.

Another is to focus on al-Qaeda and ISIS and where they're operating in the UMA.

I'm particularly interested in Africa because Caleb Weiss is here.

Caleb is a foundation for the Defense of Democracy Long War Journal in addition to the Bridgeway Foundation, and he travels in Africa and can observe the chaos.

In this particular instance, it's about Somalia. You will recall that the US got involved

in Somalia more than 30 years ago the George H. W. Bush administration and it's most

remembered as Black Hawk Down. That was Mogadishu. Since then, my

quick reading of Somalia is there's been nothing but war fighting, factionalism,

murder, and poverty. And that continues today with the Somalia government

and Mogadishu holding on the African Union either intending to pull out or leaving. the U.S. participating in some fashion of providing

airstrikes and security and Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda franchise that is dominant in Somalia as much in the news is very well

organized is a transnational organization capable of projecting power

throughout the region.

Right now, however, Caleb joins me to tell a story that is new to me, which is apparent the friction

between al-Shabaab, that's al-Qaeda, and ISIS in Somalia.

Caleb, a very good evening to you, over time I've been told that ISIS holds on with its fingertips in Afghanistan, holds on barely in

Italy province in Syria, and is mostly a ghost in major portions of the Middle East where there's genuine war fighting right

now.

That would be in the Gaza Strip, that would be in the north of Israel and Lebanon.
