This is the Friends of History Debating Society. I'm John Batchel. To Michael Yon, my good colleague in Panama City,

who is here to apprise us of what it is that Panama needs, what it is that the U.S. needs from Panama.

And in the meantime, you will recall that Panama is the hinge for the migration through the

Darien Gap to the Mexico, Texas border, and then into the United States.

If Panama shuts down, the Darian Gap shuts down.

If the Darying Gap shuts down, then the rush of migrants stops, dries up, goes away.

Now, the most recent statistic at the Texas border talked about 29,000 encounters in the month of

January, which is very low. It used to be 29,000 a day. However, Michael, I want to begin not with the numbers,

but with the Panamanian government. Since Mr. Rubio's visit, there have been reports in any event

that there's trouble in Panama having to do with the copper mine, having to do with the budget, having to do with Social Security for the people of Panama, and the questions

about the Molino government. What's your opinion of the Malino government? Is it stable now?

And does it respond to the pressure from the United States that it can't defend itself?
