0:10.0	I want to start today talking about disaster relief and the politicization of federal funds
0:17.3	to help people who have been afflicted by natural disasters. These could be the fires
0:22.6	that we're seeing in California. These could be, as we have seen before, tornadoes in the center
0:28.3	of the country or hurricane relief in Florida, New York, New Jersey, after superstorm Sandy,
0:35.9	Puerto Rico, wherever the case may be.
0:39.2	During a recent interview, Republican Senator John Barrasso was asked, are Republicans
0:44.4	going to help California recover from disasters even if they don't agree with the state's
0:50.6	politics?
0:51.4	And the reason that this even came up, of course, is that we're starting to hear so much
0:56.9	about how it's DEI or lesbians or women in charge of the LAFD or not raking the forest floors,
1:07.1	even though these are mostly fires in residential areas.
1:10.9	We're hearing all, it's Gavin New Scum, as Donald Trump troathed a few times last week.
1:17.5	So it's a reasonable question, particularly given Republicans longstanding history of double
1:22.8	standards, of when federal funds should or shouldn't be used for disaster relief, depending on whether
1:29.0	it's Kansas tornadoes or Superstorm Sandy and liberal New York and New Jersey.
1:34.2	It's a reasonable question to say to Barrasso, is there going to be a problem here with
1:40.8	Republicans agreeing to get disaster aid to liberal California.
1:45.6	And the response from Barrasso is that he does expect there will be strings attached.
1:52.7	I'm going to play the clip in a moment, but understand that disaster relief is supposed to be
1:57.1	about helping people in need, not about politics.
