Summary

It's the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower! Maybe you learned about the Pilgrims back in grade school but, if you're like me, haven't really thought about it much since.

This episode is a great refresher on the story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. But, more importantly, it's also a deep dive to understand the whole story that they didn't tell you in grade school.

In this episode I'm joined by John G. Turner, author of They Knew They Were Pilgrims: Plymouth Colony and the Contest for American Liberty.

Tune in to learn…

-What the first Thanksgiving was really like,

-Why Thanksgiving became a holiday

-The real reason the Pilgrims left England,

-Why the Pilgrims went to the Netherlands before North America,

-Why the Pilgrims Chose North America for their new colony,

-What Colony was actually before Plymouth,

-& so much more!

I'm Travis DeRose, the host. Can you believe it's 99 episodes?

0:17.1

That's almost 100, which is triple digits. So we're almost there, but not yet. Next episode.

This episode is about the 400-year anniversary of the pilgrims. That's right. 400 years ago,

0:32.5

the pilgrims landed in Plymouth. They took the Mayflower over here 400 years ago. Sounds like a long time, but

0:38.8

kind of not really either. That's crazy. Just 400 years ago. But we're going to learn about the story,

0:44.9

the real pilgrim story. That's why I have on John Turner. He is the author of a book called,

0:52.2

They knew they were pilgrims, Plymouth Colony, and the Contest for American

0:55.7

Liberty. So John, what a good name, too, John Turner. Sounds like he could have been on the

1:00.6

Mayflower. But we talk about what it was really like. We covered the story you learned in grade

1:07.3

school and elementary school of how the pilgrims worked and and that first

1:11.1

Thanksgiving and everything. But we're going to dive down and give the whole story that you

1:16.9

kind of got a half right story. We're going to get the whole story. So let's, I'm going to stop

1:22.0

talking here. Let's get into the episode. Here is John Turner. And we're rolling. What's up, Sean? How are you doing?

1:30.9

Hi, Travis. Great to be with you. Yes, with a name like John Turner, I feel like you could be,

1:36.4

you could fit right in with these pilgrims. Well, yeah, well, there was a John Turner on the Mayflower,

1:41.9

but he and his sons didn't survive the first winter, so I can't claim dissent from him.

1:48.7

Unfortunately, that would really help my cachet as a, you know, historian of Flomuth colony.

1:54.7

Yeah, that would look real good on the book jacket.

1:59.9

Well, I mean, let's just dive in.

2:01.5

I mean, first of all, this is crazy to I've been researching this, that this was only 400 years ago.
