If you are doing things through tax that reduce the overall tax revenue, there is nothing progressive or supportive of social justice about that.

And those who argue for it have to reckon with that argument.

Well, I read your wealth tax article last night.

And I was like, huh? I didn't expect this.

I think it'll actually crush the middle class more because they'll have to fight, the Treasury will have to find the money elsewhere.

There's two ways you can make the argument you've just made, right? One of them is it's wrong because we need rich people because that's how you create wealth, that's how you grow the economy and so on. So that's sort of like an aggregate argument, which I think is true. One of the general things I think has happened in politics is that

politicians have gotten away with not standing up for choices that are trade-offs. They pretend

things are win-wins and that, you know, there's no sort of difficult choices and we'll get

jobs and security and growth and all, you know, whatever else. And actually with something like that,

you might still say, no, but anyway, even though we're

going to lose more revenue than we're going to generate, we want to do it because it's morally

right. But you've got to reckon with that argument that you are then going to lose tax revenue that

you could be spending on public services, education, building roads in my constituency, etc.

And I was not convinced that that argument was being made
