Summary

Isn't it frustrating when you're unsure if you can trust what you read on Facebook, watch on YouTube, or hear on a podcast? Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news abound and it's increasingly difficult to know what's true.

We need a set of powerful tools and the skill to cut through the most intimidating data!

That's why I'm joined by Professor Jevin West in this episode. Jevin and his coauthor Carl Bergstrom are the authors of the book, Calling Bullshit: The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World.

You don't need a lot of technical expertise to call out problems with data. Are the numbers or results too good or too dramatic to be true? Is the claim comparing like with like? Is it confirming your personal bias? Tune in to understand selection bias and muddled data visualization, distinguish between correlation and causation, and examine the susceptibility of science to modern bullshit.

0:28.1

have on Jevin West. He's the author, the co-author, along with Carl Bergstrom, of a book called

0:33.5

Calling Bullshit, The Art of Skepticism in a Data-driven World. So this, I think, is a really,

0:39.7

really important episode. I'm glad you're here listening to this. I'm glad Javan came on to share

0:44.8

this info and wrote this book. But this is about developing the skill of how to tell if you're

0:51.9

being bullshaded. If you're being deceived purposely or non-purpose

0:57.0

maybe you've even shared an article or data that you thought was true but turned out to be false.

1:04.0

So this is the kind of, this is the skill that I think everybody needs.

1:07.0

I don't have the skill yet.

1:08.3

I'm going to be working on developing this, but like, we're

1:11.0

going to look into how to figure out correlation. Doesn't mean causation. We're going to dive into

1:16.4

that kind of stuff and like how you're being misled with graphs and charts and numbers. So, and

1:22.5

this is, it doesn't matter your politics or anything like that, A skill everybody should have regardless of your views on stuff.

1:30.6

So that's it.

1:31.9

Let's get to it.

1:32.7

Here's Jevin West.
