Good morning and welcome the kid news. I'm Tori. It's Tuesday, September 27th, 2022.

And we begin with an opportunity for us Earthlings to get up close and personal with the

0:12.7

largest planet in our solar system. Last night, Jupiter's orbit brought it closer that

0:18.1

it's been in nearly 60 years. To be fair, it's still 367 million miles away. But because

0:25.2

it will also reach opposition, meaning it appears to be directly opposite the Sun, it will

0:31.1

seem even bigger and brighter than normal. It's rare for those two things to happen at the same

0:36.4

time. In fact, this great view, which will only last a few days, won't happen again for another

0:42.5

117 years. According to NASA, those with good binoculars can see the central band and three

0:49.8

or four of Jupiter's 80 moons. And stargazers with telescopes, at least four inches long, should

0:56.1

also be able to see Jupiter's great red spot, a giant storm bigger than Earth that has raged

1:02.5

for hundreds of years. Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and was named after the king of

1:07.7

the ancient Roman gods because of its size, which is 11 times wider than Earth. And more than twice

1:14.7

as big as all the other planets in our solar system, combined. A pretty cool discovery has been

1:22.0

found at the bottom of a Wisconsin lake. It's a canoe, but not just any canoe. This one is estimated

1:28.5

to be 3,000 years old. Scientists use carbon dating to determine its age and believe it's the

1:35.6

oldest relic ever found in the Great Lakes region. The ancient boat was first discovered by a

1:41.2

state archaeologist on a dive in May. Historians teamed up with local Native American authorities to

1:47.6

work together and raise the rare piece from the water, which they did just last week. It's nearly

1:53.6

15 feet long and was likely made using stone tools to hollow out the trunk of an oak tree.

This canoe and another one estimated to be 1,000 years old found nearby last year will be put on

2:06.4

display at the future Wisconsin History Center when it opens in 2026.

Among those competing in the world surfing games in Southern California last weekend were six
