And we begin with NASA conducting a crash test tonight that will literally be out of this

world.

At 7.14 p.m. Eastern, one of their spacecrafts traveling at four miles per second is

expected to ram into an asteroid.

The double asteroid redirection test or DART is the first of its kind and is designed

to test our defenses against incoming space rocks.

The collision will be a bit of a mismatch, as according to NASA, the spacecraft is about

1,300 pounds, and the asteroid called dimorphous weighs about 11 billion.

As one planetary scientist put it, it will be like running a golf cart into a great pyramid.

But the point is not to blow up the rock, but rather slightly alter its orbit, which

NASA says is the best way to keep a rogue asteroid from hitting Earth.

Don't worry, dimorphous is not a threat to Earth, and NASA says it knows of no asteroid

that would be in the next century.

People with telescopes could see a slight flash upon impact, but a better view can be found

at NASA.gov, determining whether the DART test is successful could take weeks.

This of Florida are hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst, as Hurricane Ian

marches toward the U.S. mainland, picking up steam and strength along the way.

If and when it arrives, likely later this week along the west coast of the state, forecasters

say it could be a major storm, possibly a category 4, with winds of 130 miles an hour.

Federal emergency management agency or FEMA officials are telling people to prepare now,

with sandbags, food, water, and phone chargers, and know their evacuation routes as there
