The Greeks of the time of Homer and Heseid had viewed the earliest state of the universe as a

formless void that they called chaos.

And from chaos, the order of their own world had emerged, known as the Cosmos, a Greek word meaning

both order and beauty, which is where we get words such as cosmetics for makeup or cosmetic surgery to improve appearance.

Mythology served the important function of grounding the growth of the Cosmos from chaos

and various actions taken by the gods.
