And we begin with a mid-summer heat wave baking both sides of the country.

Folks in the northeast part of the U.S.

have been sweating through a couple days of high heat and humidity,

and their only consolation is they're not in the west.

That's where residents are being socked

with record challenging temperatures for the next week to 10 days.

The mercury is expected to hit 114 degrees in Phoenix and Las Vegas, today and tomorrow,

and the simmering heat could stretch up into normally cooler

states like Washington and Oregon. American crocodiles which were once

headed for extinction are thriving in an unusual spot. The canal surrounding a South Florida

nuclear plant. Last week 73 baby crocks were rescued in the area by a team of specialists

and dozens more babies are expected soon.

The team helps to monitor and protect the little crocodiles from hunting by building them nests.

And while crocodiles can seem pretty frightening to humans, the scientists say they're quite shy and want nothing to do with us.

Humans are just too big for their menu.

In sports news, it was not a typical Sunday for golfer Phil Mickelson.

The pro was in Illinois for the BMW Championship tournament, but when he tried to get into

his hotel room Sunday morning to get ready for the final round, he found out that lightning had struck the building, causing a fire, and no one could go inside.

Mikkelson tweeted, how's this for crazy?
