Today is Tuesday, August 9, 2022, and we begin with conservationists celebrating the return

of a long-lost species to its natural habitat.

For nearly 200 years, no one has spotted a Galapagos land iguana crawling around its native

Santiago island.

Scientists thought the stocky brownish red lizard, with its saggy, scaly neck and eyes on

either side of its head, had gone extinct after non-native predators like feral pigs, cats

and donkeys arrived.

But in 1997, Project Isabella was born, an environmental campaign to bring back the

bygone iguana from the brink of extinction.

The first order of business was to remove all the animals that weren't supposed to be there.

Then in 2019, conservationists tagged and released 3,000 land iguanas.

Today their numbers are booming, some big, other small and some with no tags, suggesting

that the population is now thriving on its own.

There seems to be no end to summer travel woes by midday yesterday, nearly 500 flights

were cancelled and around 2,000 delayed in the U.S. alone.

Add that to the nearly 1,000 cancelled flights reported on Sunday, and it paints a pretty

bleak picture of just how long it's taking vacationers to get where they're going.

If they get there at all, the blame game is the same as it's been all summer, severe

weather, staff shortages and high travel demand.

One Australian airline is taking an unusual step to help ease at least one of these pain
