Episode 79. The weird thing about norms is until they are challenged, until there is a reason to question them.

You rarely notice them at all.

In the United States, public bathrooms are divided by gender.

In the past, they were divided in other ways, of course, most notably by skin color,

but today they are still divided into men's rooms and women's rooms.

If you're a man, you go into one, if you are a woman, you go into the other.

And that's what is expected of us.

That's what most of us have done many times and most of us up until recently have done so without question.

It just seems normal. That's the way it's supposed to be.

But the idea of dividing bathrooms by gender is actually pretty new. It was invented around the same time as cars and elevators and light bulbs. Which is to say, it wasn't always this way.
