The podcast dedicated to helping you learn more

about how the people and events of our early American

past have shaped the present-day world we live in. When we think about slavery in

early America, our minds tend to evoke images of African and African American

plantation slaves. The men and women who were forced to labor in agricultural fields or in the

homes of wealthy white Americans.

These are images of chattel slavery.

It was the practice of slavery that predominated in early North America. The type of slavery whereby early Americans looked

upon African and African American slaves as property to be bought, sold, traded, and used as they would any piece of land or real estate or draft animals.

But did you know that some early Americans also practice a different type of slavery?

Colonists in New France practiced Native American or indigenous slavery.

Native American slavery differed from chattel slavery, and today we are going to explore this little known aspect of early American history with Brett Rushforth, author of Bonds of Alliance, Indigenous and Atlantic Slavories in New France.

During our investigation, Brett reveals how Native Americans practice slavery and how the colonists of New France came to adopt

and modify their practices.
