And we begin with an Iowa high school coming up with a creative twist on gym class.

Students can now get their credits by doing yard work

for those who can't. Under the supervision of teachers, students rake leaves, pull

weeds, cut grass, clean gutters, whatever a disabled or elderly homeowner needs in the way of outdoor chores.

One of the organizers calls it a win-win.

Students get exercise in their phys ed credits, and those who can't do their own landscaping enjoy some much needed help.

Last week we told you about Canada taking the green lead and banning single-use plastic

starting in 2021. One store planned to bridge the gap between now and then with a

little shade, but that plan quickly went sideways. The East West market in Vancouver

printed up plastic bags that read Dr. Toe's wart ointment in big bold

letters and charged five cents for anyone who didn't bring their own.

Trouble is the customers love them and instead of avoiding the bags, they're collecting

them.

So the owner is turning to plan B. He's going to put the design on

reusable sacks and hopes the whole experience at least serves as an environmental

conversation starter. Today is June 19th, also known as Juneteenth, a day to celebrate freedom for the last of the slaves in Texas in 1865.

The day came two full years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

The reason for the delay is up for debate.

Some believe that pre- Internet, that's how long it took for news to reach

everyone. Others suspect that the proclamation was intentionally withheld from those who
