Hello there, I'm Alicia McCarthy,

and this is today in Parliament from BBC Radio 4 for Friday the 6th of March,

where Peers mark International Women's Day.

I send solidarity to the courageous women around the world calling for peace,

justice and equality. Also on this programme, as MPs prepare to debate controversial plans to limit

the right to trial by jury, a conservative worries about what's being taken away.

I think to lose that damages the fabric of our constitution.

And actually with very little scrutiny,

it's something that has been keeping me awake at night.

And just how are the decaying houses of Parliament being held together?

It's a tray above the electrical systems,

catching any water that might leak and taking it away to somewhere safely.

But first, peers have paid tribute to Jill Saywood on the 40th anniversary of the Ealing Vicarage attack.

She was raped during a violent robbery on the 6th of March 1986.

Media coverage of the case and the sentencing of the men who attacked her

led to a public outcry about the treatment of victims,

and she later became the first rape survivor in the UK to waive her right to anonymity.

Speaking for the government at the start of a debate to mark International Women's Day,

Lady Lloyd said

Jill Sayward had shifted the national conversation surrounding sexual violence.
