Good morning and welcome to Kid News. I'm Tori. Today is Monday, May 27th, 2019.

And we begin with Americans from coast to coast, pausing to remember our nation's fallen soldiers.

Memorial Day, which is now always celebrated on the last Monday of May,

dates back to General John Logan, who issued orders that one day be set aside

to honor the men and women who fought and died in the civil war.

The tribute has since expanded to include all soldiers from all wars and it's now a federal

holiday meaning all banks, post offices, and schools are closed.

Usually today is also the day the President of the United States pays a visit to Arlington Cemetery,

but because he's in Japan, Mr. Trump paid his respects a few days ago before he left.

Arlington is the final resting place for over 400,000 men and women, and each year for Memorial

Day a flag is placed at each and every tombstone.

Today is also considered the unofficial start of summer with lots of parties and barbecues on tap.

If you are among those headed someplace to celebrate, you are not alone.

According to AAA, 36.7 million Americans will hit the road today.

That's up 3.5% from last year.

And if it holds true, would make this Memorial Day the second busiest road trip day ever right behind Memorial Day 2005

As far as your parents are concerned getting where they need to go won't be cheap.

Pump prices are highest in California with an average of $4.3 per gallon.

Alabama drivers get the best deal.
