Good morning, and welcome to Kid News! I'm Tori. Today is Friday, May 13th, a day steeped

in superstition. First, there's the fear of the number 13, which is called Triscodecaphobia.

At a Friday to the mix and the worry morphs into something known as Friga Triscodecaphobia.

No one's really sure when, where, or why the day became synonymous with bad luck, but

according to CNN, the real hysteria started about a hundred years ago. When Thomas

Lawson wrote the book, Friday the 13th, about a stockbroker who chose that day to intentionally

crash the stock market. Then, in 1908, the New York Times became one of the first papers

to write about all the hand-ringing of Friday the 13th causes. And as your parents can

tell you, the Friday the 13th movies of the 1980s pretty much cemented the scare for

millions. So, is there any science to back up the superstition? Experts say, not at all.

Even astronomers are star-struck. They just released the first-ever image of a massive black hole

at the heart of the Milky Way. It may be 27,000 light years away from us, but,

scientists say it's basically in our own backyard. By definition, a black hole is a place in space

where matter has collapsed in on itself, with a gravitational pull so strong that nothing,

not even light, can escape. In fact, the only way to get a picture is by capturing the ring of gas

around it. Getting a shot of what some are calling a gentle giant took 300 researchers working

together on data captured on a single day from different radio observatories around the world.
