This is Handel on the law. Bill Handel here, giving you marginal legal advice and telling you,

hopefully you have absolutely no case. Very interesting bill that has been introduced in the

California legislature, SB 1446. And this has to do with checkout lanes in supermarkets.

And they were supposed to be the end all be all.

This was the magic formula that would enable the consumer to zip through very quickly

because you can put a lot more of these checkout little stations and you can a checkout stand normal with the conveyor belt, etc.

They're not as great as everybody thought, but they're still pretty good.

And I think they've gotten the answer because a lot of people have a difficult time.

You know, put your stuff in the bagging area.

And if you don't, you put it back.

Everything stops. And so the way they figured it out that works. And this happened to me,

matter of fact, a couple days ago when for some reason something happened. And I had to call

someone to help me or they have a little call attendant button. So they say there's six

little stations there. They have one person who is walking around and helping people.

So you have one clerk at six stations instead of six clerks at six checkout, your normal checkout counters.

All right.

So with that, you can bet that the retail clerks unions are not very happy about that because that means cutting down on staff.

And so there's no way they're going to make this illegal.

That's not going to happen because the politics aren't there.

They're just too part and part and parcel of how we live now. So this bill SB 1446,

this is a really weird one, would prohibit grocery or retail drugstores from offering self-checkout

options. You can't do it unless you not allow, well, you have to have a sort of a study group at the store
