Summary

Today's episode is with Harvey Lewis, a high school teacher who set a world record at Big's Backyard Ultra this year, running 450 miles over five days. He shares his story of becoming an ultrarunner, his daily routine of running to work, his near-death experience, and his mindset when preparing for a race. Harvey gives us an inside look at his experience running the Barkley Marathons, one of the toughest ultramarathons in the world, which only 17 people have completed. So I heard you say before that these races are 70% mental 30% physical.

0:08.6

Do you still do you still believe that?

0:10.6

Oh yeah without a doubt like I mean it's it it originates in your mind and

0:15.0

like so much of it is like regaining the confidence and like the mental aspect

0:20.9

because just as your physical body can atrophy, like your mind can also

0:26.2

atrophy. You have to construct your mind to being able to do these things as much as your

0:31.4

body. There's a million reasons you could come up with

0:34.2

where you could say okay I'm done. You can always find a reason to quit and you

0:39.2

have to find your why of why you won't do that. I'm not going to ever quit a race. If I have to be

0:46.0

the last person, I'll be the last person. I would rather finish last in a race than to quit the

0:51.0

race because I'm not going to be in the top three or the top ten or

0:55.1

whatever that might be.
