Summary

Today's topic is frustration. The inspiration for today's topic is brought to you by a combination of my personal life experience and a Dr. Susan Friedman of BehaviorWorks. In one of her excellent presentations at Clicker Expo, she mentioned: Happiness is a function of positive reinforcement Depression is a function of punishment and FRUSTRATION is a function of extinction. The first two are interesting, but the third really struck me. And so that is what this episode is about. Especially since I spend a lot of time thinking about frustration. And dealing with frustrated dogs and their frustrated handlers. And dealing with a frustrated child. And being frustrated myself. At this point, I should basically be an expert. http://www.wonderpupstraining.com/blog/podcast-04-relationship-between-frustration-and-extinction#.WKuolxIrKt8

to my heart. I spend a lot of time dealing with frustrated dogs, frustrated handlers, dealing with a frustrated

Happiness is a function of reinforcement.

Depression is a function of punishment.

And frustration is a function of extinction.

1:25.0

Now, the first two are interesting and probably worth podcasts in their own right.

1:29.5

But the third really struck me. And I thought maybe you might also feel frustrated sometimes or see your dog feeling frustrated. And so I thought that might

1:36.0

be an interesting thing to talk about. But I want to lay a little background first. In order to talk

1:41.8

about frustration, we need to be able to describe and define it. Emotions, any emotion,

1:49.2

really is a construct, right? It's a combination of different behaviors that we can see from the

1:55.6

outside. Some are voluntary and some are involuntary. And all those things together make up a constellation,

2:02.2

and we call that the particular emotion. So let's do a little visualization exercise.
