Hey, dog trainers. This is Hannah Branigan, and you are listening to Drinking from the toilet.

This week, we are getting real with Leslie McDevitt.

Leslie is a certified dog behavior consultant who you may recognize from her famous and effective

program, Control Unleashed, which you'll often hear us abbreviate as CU. Through her classes,

seminars, books, and DVDs, Leslie helps dog owners and professional training

instructors turn stress into confidence and distraction into focus using methods that are

entirely based on positive reinforcement.

Her control and leash program is designed specifically to help dogs with, quote, issues,

learn how to relax, focus, and work off-leash reliably in either stressful

or stimulating situations.

Now, this was our first time trying to record a remote interview over the internet, and

we did work through some technological challenges, which I'm sure will improve with practice.

We are shaping behavior after all.

We didn't really have a plan and we weren't entirely sure what to expect. So what follows is

about a 30-minute stream of consciousness conversation between two enthusiastic dog trainers.

But during that time, we talked about how Leslie got started with dogs and what led

her to develop her program, what really bugs her in the dog training world these days,

and the importance of splitting behavior for both human and canine learners, and also why I should

always have adult supervision before attempting to use any electronic device.
