Summary

We are now in the 7th month of this COVID pandemic purgatory, and way way back in April of this year Birding magazine editor Ted Floyd and host Nate Swick had a conversation about what birding will look like during the pandemic. Well, here we are in October, looking at a long winter wherein COVID is still a concern, but at least we have a slightly greater perspective on what we know and what we don’t about everything.

nearly every aspect of our hobby is impacted by the decisions of policy makers not just at the

federal level but all the way down you want to see more wildlife-friendly zoning decisions

or more parks in places where there aren't parks. I mean, those are the results of city and county,

even neighborhood democracy and action. Some of the places that I bird where I live are there

because the city council and the city planner decided, hey, there should

be a park here. And of course, I love my state's state park system, which is there because my state

made it a priority to purchase that land, to build the infrastructure up, to staff those facilities

with decent paying jobs, to attract individuals who manage

the park in a way that makes it conducive to birding. This is all really important stuff. This is all

stuff that is on the ballot, not at the top of the ticket where all the action is, but all the way
