Before I had children, I pictured days spent at home with them surrounded by a rose-colored glow.

We would read books and giggle together, we would bake and play outside,

and my voice would be that of a sing-songy Disney princess,

uttering happy words of encouragement and love all the time.

Fast forward seven years and our life is a little different than I had imagined.

Yes, we do read books together, laugh together and play outside,

but life is certainly not surrounded by a rose-colored glow all the time,

and perhaps the thing that is most different from my visions of motherhood and my actual motherhood

is the way I talk to my children.
