Today is Friday, February 6th, 20206th, opening ceremony day for the Winter Olympics.

And we begin with a wily coyote that made a daring

mile-plus swim to Alcatraz Island about to get the boot. A few weeks ago, park visitors

witnessed the animal paddling in Chile Bay waters from San Francisco toward the notorious prison

turned tourist attraction. Something no coyote is known to have done since the National

Park Service took over 50 years ago. Experts think the youngster may have been looking for

new territory and wasn't afraid to test his swim skills to find it. He's since been spotted alive

and seemingly healthy on the island. But staying is apparently not an option. Not only is there

a lack of fresh water, but wildlife experts say the island is also home to hundreds of at-risk

nesting seabirds. That, to a coyote, all look like dinner. Park staff told S.F. Gate that the visitor,

nicknamed Floyd, has a week to make the long swim back to San Francisco

on his own, or they'll gently relocate him to an undetermined location with a more suitable habitat.
