Hello, I'm Alicia McCarthy, and this is today in Parliament from BBC Radio 4th, Wednesday the 2nd of April,

where the Prime Minister promises a calm and pragmatic approach to Donald Trump's import taxes.

It's not sensible to say the first response

to be to jump in to a trade war. But the conservative leader reckons Kea Starma has weakened

the economy. The fact is his decisions have made our economy fragile, just as we face global

trade wars. Also on this program, the Education Secretary announces funding for new school-based nurseries in England.

And could the Heathrow shutdown have been prevented?

I'd actually warned Heathrow of concerns that we had with regard to the substations.

But first, as the world waited for Donald Trump to confirm the imposition of new import

taxes on goods entering the US, the Prime Minister told MPs his government had prepared

for all eventualities.

The United States President has already imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium and goods

from some countries, including Mexico and Canada.

Now, on what the White House had labelled Liberation Day, he was preparing to unveil a wider

set of charges. A Prime Minister's question, Sakea Stama said a trade war was in no one's

interests. And the country deserves, and we will take a calm, pragmatic approach.

That's why constructive talks are progressing to agree a wider economic prosperity deal with

the US.

That's why we're working with all industries and sectors likely to be impacted. Our decisions will always be guided by our national

interests and that's why we have prepared for all eventualities and we will rule nothing out.
