Summary

Before 2015, a 365 day round the world Big Year had never been attempted. The playing field was intimidating, the perceived cost was daunting, and the logistics were demanding. But in 2015 Noah Strycker tossed all that aside, tackling an ambitious year of birding that took him to all 7 continents and saw him finish with a list of over 6,000 species - well more than half of the world’s species - and an amazing collection of experiences and stories. His recently published memoir detailing his exceptional year is called Birding without Borders: An Obsession, A Quest, and the Biggest Year in the World. In this episode, Noah joins host Nate Swick to talk about his big year, his book, and what he learned at the end of it all.

Also, Birding editor Ted Floyd and webmaster Greg Neise are back to talk about winter finches, specifically crossbills. This winter looks like it is going to be a good one for the fascinating little finches.

You might remember that I spoke with Alvaro Haramillo about the birds on the Caribbean islands of Barbuda, Dominica, and Puerto Rico,

and how they are doing following this past hurricane season.

We spent a fair bit of that discussion talking about the

imperial parrot locally called the Cicero and how it at the time we were speaking, and even

1:17.7

up to the time that the episode was released, had not yet been found in the forests in the upper

elevations of the island of Dominica. There was concern after the passage of Hurricane Maria that the Cicero was potentially gone,

that the storm was an extinction level event for that bird,

and how that was sort of heartbreaking from both a biological and a cultural standpoint.

The imperial parrot adorns the national flag of Dominica, one of the few nations

with a bird on its flag, or at least one that isn't some variation of a stylized eagle.

Well, good news came last week when Birds Caribbean reported that a researcher on Dominica

did find one imperial parrot, so at least the species is not extinct. There's obviously hope that as the

forest on the island are further surveyed that more individuals will turn up. They are not an
