2019 and we begin with President Trump heading to the southern border of the

United States today as he continues to make his case for a border wall.

The issue of border security is central to the current government's shutdown, now in its

20th day.

Reports that a top attorney for the White House is going along on this trip have some people wondering if the President will invoke a national emergency around the issue of illegal immigration.

Doing so would give him the power to direct government funds to building a wall without

congressional approval.

Whether that kind of move is legal or not is a big question and would likely have to be decided

by the courts.

The ongoing government shutdown has produced another casualty.

Joshua Tree National Park is putting up a close sign today after volunteer workers determined

they aren't able to protect its

habitat. Over the last few weeks incidents of off-road driving have led to the

destruction of some of the park's namesake Joshua Trees as well as the

creation of new roads along the 800,000 acre landscape.

Challenges involving sanitation removal, safety, and resource protection during the shutdown

have already forced the closure of other California parks

including parts of Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon.

Joshua Tree alone sees upwards of 4 million visitors each year.
