When thinking about the killer who was the subject of today's tale, one of the things that came to light in the wake of his crime spree was his manifesto.

I started thinking back, trying to remember the first time I had heard of such a thing

a killer's manifesto a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of an individual.

And I think the first notable killer I recall having a manifesto was Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber.

He was the mathematician, anarchist, and domestic terrorist, who was a mathematical prodigy and abandoned his academic career in 1969 who between 1978 and 1995 killed three people and injured 23 others in a nationwide

mail bombing campaign that targeted people with careers involving modern technology.

In 1995 Kaczynski mailed a number of letters to several media outlets outlining his objectives. He demanded that his 35,000 word

essay entitled Industrial Society and its Future be printed verbatim by a major newspaper publication. This

essay is what became known as the Unabomber Manifesto. Kaczynski said that if his essay were to be published, that he would stop his terrorist bombings.

There was a controversy as to whether or not the document should be published.

The attorney general at the time, Janet Reno, along with

FBI Director Lewis Freee, recommended it be published, not only out of concern for public safety, but also in the hopes that someone reading the thing would be able to identify the author.

Penthouse magazine offered to publish the manifesto, but Kaczynski replied that that magazine was not a respectable publication,

and that if it were to be published by Penthouse, that he would reserve the right to plant one bomb intended to kill after the manuscript has been published.

On September 19, 1995, the New York Times and the Washington Post published the Unabomber's Manifesto.
